Hitting The Snooze Button Can Be Tempting
We all have mornings where the snooze button seems like our best friend.
Maybe you had a late night, are facing a stressful day ahead, or it’s just one of those mornings where getting out of bed feels especially hard. Hitting the snooze button is a tempting way to get a few moments of rest before you officially start your day.
Those extra 10 or 15 minutes in bed may feel heavenly at the time, but they often cause more harm than good in the long run. The snooze button can make you feel more tired during the day, and your sleep patterns can get disrupted at night.
A few reasons why you shouldn’t hit the snooze button in the morning:
The Snooze Button Actually Makes You More Tired
It may sound counterintuitive, but hitting the snooze button won’t do much to relieve tiredness. Instead, it’s a bandaid solution. Those extra minutes provide temporary relief while confusing your body in the long term.
Our internal clocks are smarter than we realize. They tell our body when it’s time to go to sleep and when it’s time to wake up, so snoozing for an extra few minutes sends mixed signals that can last all day long.
Sleeping In Short Increments Disrupts Your Sleep Cycle
Our sleep cycle includes 4 main stages:
- Drowsy: The transition period between being awake and asleep; ideally lasting between 5 and 10 minutes.
- Light: Your body begins to relax, your heart rate slows down, and your body temperature drops; it usually lasts around 20 minutes.
- Deep: Your body begins to work on tissue repair, growth, cell regeneration, and immune system strengthening. This stage is crucial for maintaining good overall health and lasts from 20-40 minutes.
- REM (Rapid Eye Movement): This is the dream stage, where our brain becomes active and produces vivid dreams. Your body is still working on restoration during the REM phase, which lasts another 20-40 minutes.
The cycle continues throughout the night until our bodies feel rested enough to naturally awaken towards the end of a cycle.
Hitting the snooze button resets the REM cycle, which means you might wake up during the middle of the cycle instead of at the end. This will leave you feeling groggy and dazed, likely the opposite of what you were trying to achieve.
Inconsistent Sleep Can Lead To Stress, Inflammation, And Illness
Hitting the snooze button every once in a while isn’t a big deal, but making it a daily habit can seriously affect your health. A permanently disrupted sleep cycle leads to increased stress levels, a weakened immune system, and a heightened risk of inflammation and heart disease, stroke, and cancer.
How To Avoid Hitting The Snooze Button For Better Sleep

Go to bed at the right time for you
Most sleep experts recommend between 7-8 hours of sleep a night for adults. If you know you have to wake up at a specific time in the morning, make sure you’re planning your bedtime accordingly.
Exercise during the day
Get fit and sleep better by working out during the day. Studies show that even half an hour of moderate exercise a day can improve sleep quality, as it reduces stress levels and blood pressure and tires our bodies out in general.
Avoid stimulants before bed
Caffeine and blue light work to keep us energized, so you’ll want to avoid that evening coffee and late-night social media scroll. Instead, create a calming evening routine with dim lights, decaffeinated beverages, and minimal screen time.
Create a relaxing environment
Prepare your body for sleep by making your bedroom as relaxing as possible. Turn off bright lights, indulge in soothing aromatherapy, and make your bed as comfortable as possible with a supportive mattress and soft, cozy bedding.
Eliminate the temptation
The easiest way to never hit the snooze button again is to eliminate it altogether. You can invest in an old-fashioned alarm clock that doesn’t have a snooze button. Or, you can use the trick of placing your alarm clock (or phone) on the other side of your bedroom, so you have to physically get up to turn it off.
