Trouble Sleeping? Here Are Some Great Tips For a Good Night’s Rest

Feeling tired, worn down, crabby, and yet can’t seem to sleep at night? You’re not alone.  Many adults suffer from sleep troubles that keep them from feeling at their absolute best.

Although you may not be able to fix all the troubles keeping you away from dreamland, here are some ideas on things you can do to minimize those hours when your brain just won’t shut down, and you can’t sleep.

  • Get up and go to bed at the same time each day. This helps keep your body’s internal clock and sleep cycle consistent.
  • Avoid afternoon naps.  They may give you a pick-me-up at the end of the day, but can lead to your body expecting to stay up later.
  • Avoid exercising in the evening before bed. Exercise is a great aid to sleep in most situations, but in the evening, the high endorphin and adrenaline levels released into your blood from working out can keep you awake.
  • Create a bedtime routine.  Setting up a regular bedtime ritual or relaxing activity such as reading a book before sleeping can signal to your brain that is time to sleep.
  • Don’t eat large meals right before bed. Eating large meals right before bed can lead to heartburn and digestive discomfort that can keep you awake.
  • How conducive is your room to sleep?  Make sure your room is comfortable for sleeping in.  For example, it isn’t too hot, too noisy, or too bright for you to sleep comfortably.  If your room is too bright at night, you may want to get dark curtains or a sleep mask.
  • How old is your mattress and pillows?  If you wake up often due to itchy eyes, sore hips or shoulders, or discomfort lying down, it may be time to look into a new mattress, or a different type of mattress.  Older mattresses can also harbor allergens such as dust and pet dander that could be affecting your sleep.
  • See a doctor or go to a sleep study. If you tried all the things above, and you still can’t sleep, it’s important to go to a doctor and make sure your trouble sleeping isn’t indicative of some other illness or sleep condition.

Getting a good night’s sleep on a regular basis is necessary to stay happy, healthy and active.  These tips will hopefully help send everyone’s sleep troubles packing.  If you have any questions on the types of new mattresses and accessories available, please stop by one of our seven area showrooms or make an appointment for a one-on-one sleep consultation.
