If you’ve ever invested in more than a futon, chances are you realize that buying a mattress is an important decision. Choosing the right mattress can make the difference between being energized, confident and aware, or being exhausted, cranky and absent-minded. But no one wants to buy a new mattress before they really need to. Some sources say a mattress is good for 10 years. Other sources say 5. Reality says it depends on what kind of wear and tear your mattress is getting. So how do you know when it is time for a new mattress? The following questions can help you decide.
Quality sleep: Do you toss and turn before falling asleep? Do you awaken in the middle of the night? Do you struggle to get out of bed in the morning?
Healthy sleep: Do you awaken with stiff, sore shoulders, elbows, hips or knees? Do you wake up with back pains you didn’t have when you went to bed? When the mattress is bare, do you notice valleys or grooves in its surface? When you run your hands over the mattress, do you feel sharp edges under the cover?
Hygienic sleep: Do you notice a change in your bedroom’s aroma when you climb into bed? Have you ever been awakened by the smell of your bed? Does the cover of your mattress look grey or stained? Are there crusty or dusty bits around the binding of your mattress?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, your mattress may be doing you a disservice every night, and it might be time to make a change. Still unsure? Answer these questions:
Quality sleep: Do you fall asleep within 15-20 minutes of climbing into bed every night? Do you sleep through the night?
Healthy sleep: Do you wake up refreshed after 7-9 hours, feeling better than you did when you went to bed? When the mattress is bare, does it maintain its original shape?
Hygienic sleep: Would you say your mattress has no scent at all? Does the surface of your mattress cover look clean and fresh?
If you answered “no” to any of these questions, it is time to look into getting a new mattress. But remember: not all mattresses are made equal.
