What is a double-sided mattress?
A double-sided mattress, sometimes called a flippable or dual-sided mattress, is built with comfort and support materials on both sides so it can be flipped over and slept on from either side. This traditional construction extends the mattress’s lifespan significantly, since rotating and flipping distributes wear evenly across both surfaces. Custom Comfort Mattress is one of the few American mattress makers that still handcrafts double-sided mattresses, a hallmark of our heritage construction.
Why don't most mattress companies make double-sided mattresses anymore?
Most mattress companies stopped making double-sided mattresses in the early 2000s because single-sided construction is cheaper and faster to produce. Single-sided mattresses use less material and require less labor, allowing manufacturers to sell more mattresses at higher margins, but they also wear out faster, often within 6 to 8 years. At Custom Comfort Mattress, we continue handcrafting double-sided mattresses because they last longer, sleep better over time, and represent the traditional craftsmanship our family-owned business has practiced since 1986.
How long do double-sided mattresses last compared to single-sided?
Double-sided mattresses typically last 15 to 20 years, while single-sided mattresses last 6 to 10 years. The longevity difference comes from the ability to flip and rotate a double-sided mattress, which prevents the body impressions and sagging that develop on single-sided mattresses where you always sleep on the same surface. Over the long term, a double-sided mattress often costs less per year of use despite the higher upfront price.
How often should you flip a double-sided mattress?
Flip a double-sided mattress every three to six months to distribute wear evenly and maintain optimal comfort. In addition to flipping, rotate the mattress 180 degrees so the head and foot positions alternate. New mattresses may benefit from more frequent rotation in the first year as the materials settle. Are double-sided mattresses worth the higher price?
Yes, double-sided mattresses are typically worth the higher upfront price because they last roughly twice as long as single-sided mattresses. When calculated as cost per year of use, a quality double-sided mattress often comes out cheaper than buying two or three single-sided replacements over the same period. They also tend to feel better over time, since the materials wear more evenly and sagging is significantly reduced.
Can you flip a single-sided mattress?
No, single-sided mattresses are not designed to be flipped because the comfort layers are only on one side. Flipping the mattress means sleeping on the firm support base, which is uncomfortable and can void the warranty. You can rotate a single-sided mattress 180 degrees to redistribute wear, but it won’t extend the lifespan the way flipping a double-sided mattress does. If longevity is a priority, a double-sided mattress is the better long-term investment.
