Romance in Bed: 6 Easy Ways to Make Your Bedroom More Romantic

It’s that time of year again. Or really, if you’ve been to a store in the last month it has been that time of year ever since New Year’s–you got it, we’re talking about Valentine’s Day. If you’re looking to bring the romance, you’re probably thinking about your bedroom. There are some simple things you can do to give your room an update and crank up the romance for a sweet Valentine’s Day weekend.

Follow these tips and your space will surely be sweeter—not just on Valentine’s Day, but every day of the year.

Clean and Organize Your Bedroom

Nothing kills the mood like a messy bedroom. Clutter and mess create tension and stress. To instantly give your bedroom the easiest facelift possible, just give it a good deep cleaning. To go the extra mile, freshen carpets with carpet powder and stow the laundry hamper in the closet. Out of sight, out of mind–no worrying about laundry when you should be concentrating on your Valentine. If you aren’t normally the one who does the cleaning, all the better. There is nothing more romantic than doing chores you wouldn’t normally do to make your love’s life a little easier.

Pick the Right Color Scheme

When you think “romance” you might think of red or pink and cringe at the thought of putting those colors in your bedroom. Actually, warm neutral colors seem to turn up that lovin’ feeling for most of us. According to studies, a palette of colors like beige, camel, or chocolate brown is what gets people in the mood. Your best bet is to let the colors stay warm and neutral, so there’s nothing to distract you from your sweetheart.

Create a Sweet Escape

A romantic bedroom is a sanctuary where you can cuddle your cares away. Make sure your bedroom is at a comfortable temperature (ideally between 67 and 75 degrees), and free from stress and distraction. That also means removing all those gadgets we love. The mere sight of a laptop on the dresser could remind you of that report you need to send on Monday, and who can resist at least sneaking a glance when their phone lights up with an alert? Take away the temptation to focus on anything but your partner. If the bedroom also doubles as your workspace, take care to at least hide or stow your work items during off-work hours.

The only exception to the electronics rule is music. But select a playlist ahead of time that you know will set the right tone. Romantic music doesn’t have only to consist of sappy love songs; sometimes the most romantic song is one that reminds you of each other, or that you listened to at a particular time and place.

Cast Yourself in the Best Light

Don’t underestimate the power of lighting. Ideally, all bedrooms would have recessed lights with a dimmer. But for those of us not living in a dream bedroom, there are ways you can fake the perfect glow. For bedroom spaces, warm lighting creates a sense of comfort. Everyone’s skin looks great when it’s lit with a slightly pinkish light. You can DIY this effect by buying a lampshade and painting the inside a pale rosy hue.

One more thing–if you’re thinking candles, remember safety. Filling a room with a ton of candles sounds romantic, but consider LED candles too. Some of them even flicker like real candles.

Scent the Room for Romance

Your sense of smell is the sense most strongly tied to memory. Paying attention to the way a room smells can go the extra mile to create a romantic setting. Fragrances like vanilla, sandalwood, or amber are great to set a sensual mood. However, if you want that extra special something, a spritz of perfume or cologne that your partner loves on the sheets will immediately take them back to a time they smelled it on you.

Don’t Forget About the Bed

You can’t talk about a romantic bedroom without of course focusing on the bed. Your bed should be so comfortable you never want to leave. If you don’t already have one, consider a mattress topper you can “sink into”. Dress your bed in sheets 400 thread count or higher for maximum comfort, and keep a cozy comforter on hand to snuggle up in. A word about throw pillows–resist the urge to cover your bed with a mountain of throw pillows. Too many pillows are too much fuss and create clutter.

Creating romance in your space is easy with a little time and forward-thinking. Here’s wishing you a very happy Valentine’s Day (and night)!
