FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Natural latex is harvested from rubber tree sap, while synthetic latex is manufactured from petroleum-based chemicals. Natural latex is more durable, more breathable, and free from the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that synthetic latex can release. Many mattresses sold as “latex” are actually a blend of synthetic and natural. At Custom Comfort Mattress, we prioritize natural latex in our handcrafted mattresses for a healthier, longer-lasting sleep environment.
Natural latex mattresses produce minimal to no off-gassing because they’re made from a renewable plant-based material rather than synthetic chemicals. You may notice a faint, sweet, vanilla-like scent from natural latex when the mattress is new, but it dissipates quickly and isn’t harmful. Synthetic latex and blended latex mattresses can off-gas more noticeably due to the chemicals used in their production.
Latex mattresses offer responsive, buoyant support, while memory foam offers slow-sinking, body-conforming support. Latex pushes back against pressure and sleeps cooler, making it better for combination sleepers, hot sleepers, and people who don’t like the “stuck” feeling of memory foam. Latex also lasts significantly longer than memory foam, typically 15 to 25 years compared to 6 to 10 years for foam.
